오늘 나성범 선수가 메이저리그 계약에 실패했다는 소식을 접했다. 데뷔 때부터 좋아했던 선수였기에 조금 아쉬움도 있었지만, 사실 이번 결과를 조금 예상하고는 있었다.

 

만 30세가 넘는 나이, 무릎 부상, 변화구에 대한 약점 등으로 메이저리그 진출이 쉽지는 않을 것이라고 짐작했기 때문이다.

 

미국 현지 평가가 궁금해 검색해본 결과, 작년 상반기에 작성된 기사들임에도 이미 많은 매체에서 나성범 선수의 메이저리그 진출 전망 가능성을 낮게 예측하고 있었다.

 

비록 아쉬운 결과이지만, 나성범 선수의 멋진 외야 송구와 호쾌한 홈런을 올해 다시 기대해 본다.

10. Sung-bum Na (나성범), OF, NC Dinos (KBO)

We'll end with Na, who was limited to 23 games last season due to a knee injury. 

 

Prior to the injury, Na was considered one of the top players in the league thanks to his consistently above-average stick: he's averaged 25-plus home runs over his last five full seasons, and posted an OPS of at least .900 in four of those five tries.

Na's defense isn't stellar, so he'll have to prove he's hearty and hale at the dish if he's ever going to have a chance at a career in the majors. He'll turn 31 later this year, so the clock is ticking.

5. Sung-Bum Na, OF, NC Dinos

Na is one of the KBO’s most famous prospects. He put together five straight 20-home run seasons before suffering a serious knee injury on a slide last year that limited him to 23 games. Na is a thick, physical 30-year old who has above- average pull power and uses his hands well to stay inside the ball. He hits fastballs but struggles with offspeed pitches and changing speeds in general, resulting in too many swings and misses and limiting him to a projected below-average hitter. Na’s lefthanded power and plus arm give him a chance to win a job as a reserve or platoon outfielder in the major leagues. He is primarily a right fielder.

Ultimately though, while I think he’s rosterable, Na will likely not be an impact player. In an optimistic scenario, hecould manage a wRC+ on the right side of average as a bat off the bench, perhaps even in a platoon if he handles velocity better than I anticipate. But against premium gas and better spin than he’s ever seen, I think it’s more likely that he’s an up-and-down player. There are just too many ways to get him out.

With that in mind, I expect the bidding to be pretty low: A one-year, six-figure deal seems about right. A source I spoke with suggested that those terms will likely fall below Na’s expectations (he’s represented by the Boras Corporation, for what it’s worth) and that he may stay put if the money isn’t right. Time will tell.
